Two Berkey Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition filter elements

Berkey® Phoenix filters

Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition™ Filter Elements

The Phoenix element is the only filter officially endorsed by New Millennium Concepts, Ltd. for use in Berkey® water systems in lieu of Black Berkey® Elements (BB9-2). It's what now comes standard in every Berkey system we sell - and the filter to buy when it's time for replacements.

  • NSF/ANSI 42 & NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 certified
  • Tested by independent third-party labs to remove or reduce 200+ contaminants
  • Fits every Berkey® system and most other gravity-fed systems
  • Up to 5,500 gallons per pair

What changed from Black Berkey®

Same fit. New formulation. Faster water.

If you've used Black Berkey® elements, Phoenix will feel familiar: same size, same mounting, same priming routine.

Officially endorsed

The only filter New Millennium Concepts, Ltd. officially endorses for Berkey® systems in lieu of Black Berkey® Elements (BB9-2).

NSF certified

Certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 42 (aesthetic impurities that affect taste and odor) and NSF/ANSI/CAN Standard 372 (lead-free).

Faster filtration

The new formulation filters water quicker than Black Berkey elements - up to 4.2 gallons per hour per pair with the upper chamber full.

Fits what you own

Go Berkey Kit, Travel, Berkey Light, Big, Royal, Imperial and Crown - plus most other gravity-fed filter systems.

How Phoenix elements work

Each element combines microfiltration and adsorption in a dense block of premium CTC-60 coconut shell carbon, activated at high temperature, then molded and sintered.

  • Microfiltration: a "tortuous path" of tiny pores traps silt, sediment, rust and other non-dissolved contaminants.
  • Adsorption: activated carbon adsorbs VOCs, PFAS/PFOA/PFOS, SOCs, disinfectants, pesticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals and chlorine.
  • Contact time: gravity filtration gives water extended contact time with the media.

The base is a durable glass-filled polymer that's BPA-free and NSF/FDA food-contact compliant. Elements are re-cleanable during their life.

Lifespan

Replace each element every 2,750 gallons - 5,500 gallons per pair. Filters may require replacement sooner depending on the quality of your source water. Adding a second pair to a Big or Royal Berkey doubles the gallons between replacements and speeds up flow.

What Phoenix does - and doesn't - do

  • Doesn't lower TDS. Phoenix lets healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium pass through. Those minerals are total dissolved solids, so a TDS meter isn't an accurate way to judge water quality.
  • Fluoride needs PF-2™. For fluoride and arsenic reduction, add Berkey PF-2™ elements, which attach to the bottom of the Phoenix elements in the lower chamber. Our Phoenix + PF-2 combo includes both.
  • Made for treated tap water. Phoenix elements are tested against typical non-biological contaminants in municipal (treated) tap water. We don't claim they remove bacteria, viruses or parasites, or make lake, river, rain or other untreated water safe to drink. For questions about untreated sources, contact Berkey support at (888) 803-4438.

PF-2™ elements attach right below Phoenix

Berkey PF-2™ Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Elements screw onto the bottom of the Phoenix element stems and sit in the lower chamber. They adsorb fluoride, arsenic(V) and pre-oxidized arsenic(III), and other residual typical heavy metal ions. Replace PF-2s after 1,000 gallons under normal conditions.

FAQ

Phoenix filter questions

Do Phoenix filters fit my older Berkey?

Yes. Phoenix elements fit all Berkey® systems - including older Big, Royal, Imperial, Crown, Travel and Berkey Light systems - and most other brands of gravity-fed systems.

Should I replace both elements at once?

Yes - we recommend replacing elements in pairs so every element in your system wears at the same rate.

How do I prime Phoenix elements?

Use the included PrimeEasy™ Universal Primer on your faucet to run water through each element. The instructions also cover priming with the sealing washer on a faucet, or an off-grid bottle method. Then run the red dye test to confirm a good seal.

Are Phoenix filters available in California or Iowa?

No. Per Berkey, Phoenix elements are not available for sale to residents of California and Iowa, so we can't ship them there.
